Election Holiday In April 2026: EC Mandates Leave for All Eligible Voters; Check State-Wise Poll Dates & Rules
For improving voter participation, the Election Commission of India has announced a paid holiday on polling day for the upcoming general elections and bye-elections 2026. The rule applies to all eligible voters, including private employees, daily wage workers, and casual labourers making sure that no one misses the chance to cast their vote.

As per the directive, employees who are entitled to vote in the upcoming elections will be given a full-day paid leave, and importantly, no wage deduction is allowed. Employers who fail to comply with this order may face penalties or fines, since it is mandatory across sectors.
Paid Leave for Voters Working Outside Constituency
The Election Commission has also clarified that the paid holiday benefit will also be extended to voters working outside their constituency. This means employees can take time off to travel and vote without worrying about salary loss.
The decision seems sensible at this time since it will encourage every eligible citizen to vote & help increase voter turnout, especially among migrant workers and professionals who often skip voting due to work commitments.
