In a high-profile meeting scheduled for tomorrow, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is set to meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog, along with Israelis whose relatives have been held by Hamas in Gaza. The meeting comes amid accusations from civil rights groups about Musk's alleged role in amplifying antisemitic sentiments on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), Reuters reported.
Herzog's office announced that during the meeting, the Israeli President will stress the urgency of taking action against the escalating antisemitism online, a concern that has gained prominence in recent times. Musk, known for his role in leading Tesla and founding X, has not responded to requests for comments on the matter.
The meeting coincides with a four-day truce in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants in Gaza. This temporary ceasefire has allowed 40 of the 240 hostages, as claimed by Israel, held by Hamas to return to Israel.

Israeli news outlet Channel 12 reported that Musk is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, although there has been no immediate comment from Netanyahu's office. This follows a prior meeting between the two in California on September 18, during which Netanyahu urged Musk to find a balance between protecting free expression and combating hate speech on X.
In a previous visit to Tesla's California factory, where the meeting took place, about 200 people protested against Netanyahu's government for attempting to limit the powers of Israeli courts.
The controversy surrounding Musk escalated on November 15 when he endorsed a post on X that falsely claimed Jewish people were fueling hatred against white individuals. Musk responded by stating that the user's reference to the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory was "the actual truth." This theory falsely alleges that Jewish people and leftists are orchestrating the replacement of white populations with non-white immigrants, leading to a "white genocide."
The White House condemned Musk's endorsement, labelling it an "abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate" that goes against American core values. In response, major US companies, including Walt Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, and NBCUniversal parent Comcast, temporarily halted their advertisements on Musk's social media site.
The fallout from Musk's controversial statement has fueled concerns about rising antisemitism and Islamophobia, not only in the United States but globally. The Anti-Defamation League reported a nearly 400% increase in antisemitic incidents in the US following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, highlighting the need for proactive measures to counter online hate speech.
Musk, who has emphasized X as a platform for diverse viewpoints, has asserted that the company will limit the distribution of posts violating its policies, framing this approach as "freedom of speech, not reach." Concurrently, Musk is in the process of developing an artificial intelligence startup, aligning with Israel's status as a world leader in the field due to its flourishing computing and robotics industries.
As Musk engages in discussions with Israeli leaders and individuals affected by the conflict, the meeting holds significance not only for the tech mogul but also for addressing the broader challenges of combating online hate speech and promoting tolerance in an increasingly digital world.
