The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made significant strides in enhancing the efficiency of claim settlements during the fiscal year 2023-24, settling a staggering 4.45 crore claims. A notable portion of these, approximately 2.84 crore, were advance claims for fund withdrawals by members for reasons such as illness, marriage, and education. The labour ministry has announced a series of measures aimed at facilitating ease of living for its members, including the extension of the auto claim solution to cover all claims under para 68K (education & marriage) and 68B (housing) of the EPF Scheme, 1952.

In a move set to benefit lakhs of EPFO members, the limit for advance claims has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000. This enhancement is expected to significantly aid members in promptly meeting their financial needs related to education, marriage, or housing. The labour ministry's statement highlighted that the auto-settlement process is entirely driven by an IT system, thereby reducing human intervention and shortening the claim settlement period from 10 days to just 3-4 days for such advances.
Furthermore, during this period, about 89.52 lakh claims were settled using the auto-mode feature. This system not only expedites the settlement process but also ensures that claims not validated by the system undergo a second level of scrutiny and approval rather than being outright rejected or returned. This streamlined approach underscores EPFO's commitment to enhancing member satisfaction and operational efficiency.
Since its nationwide introduction on May 6, 2024, the auto claim solution has approved 13,011 cases amounting to Rs 45.95 crore, demonstrating its effectiveness in providing speedy service. Initially launched in April 2020 to facilitate advance claims for illness with a limit up to Rs 1,00,000, this facility has now been expanded to include education, marriage, and housing purposes.
The ministry shared a success story of Anirudh Prasad who applied for an advance for illness under para 68J of the scheme on May 9, 2024. His claim was settled within three days on May 11, 2024, for Rs 92,143, showcasing the rapid response capability of the EPFO's automated system. With around 2.25 crore members expected to benefit from this facility in the current year alone, EPFO's initiatives are poised to significantly enhance the ease of living for its vast member base.
