Equinix has inaugurated its AI-ready data centre in Chennai with an investment of USD 69 million. This facility aims to enhance digital infrastructure and support AI development, providing businesses with low-latency access to a robust digital ecosystem.
Equinix, a digital infrastructure company, has launched its AI-ready International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Chennai. This new facility, named CN1, represents an initial investment of USD 69 million, approximately Rs 608 crore. Situated on land owned by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) in Siruseri, the centre aims to enhance business digitisation and AI development in India.

The CN1 data centre is strategically linked with Equinix's Mumbai campus, which comprises three IBX data centres. This connection supports a robust cloud ecosystem with access to major platforms like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. Currently, CN1 can accommodate 800 cabinets and plans to expand its capacity to 4,250 cabinets.
Expanding Digital Ecosystem
Equinix's presence in India includes hosting over 300 companies, such as network service providers and five internet exchanges. The company's Mumbai campus is known for its high-performance data centres that facilitate seamless cloud integration. With the addition of CN1, businesses in Chennai can now benefit from low-latency access to this extensive digital ecosystem.
"Our success in building the most interconnected ecosystem for cloud, carrier, content and enterprises in Mumbai will now be extended to customers in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, global enterprises planning to come closer to their customers in southern India now can leverage Equinix’s IBX facility in Chennai," stated Manoj Paul, Managing Director of Equinix India.
Global Reach and Regional Presence
Globally, Equinix operates more than 270 data centres across 77 markets in 36 countries. These facilities serve over 10,000 leading businesses worldwide. In the Asia-Pacific region alone, Equinix boasts a portfolio of more than 60 data centres spread across countries including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
The establishment of CN1 marks a significant step for Equinix as it extends its reach into southern India. This expansion aligns with the company's strategy to provide enhanced connectivity options for businesses looking to tap into India's growing digital market.
