The European Union has made a major breakthrough in efforts to stop sending its plastic trash to poor countries. Under a tentative agreement, the 27 EU countries will no longer be able to export their plastic waste outside the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development club of wealthy countries.
The European Union (EU) has taken a significant step towards reducing plastic pollution by agreeing to stop exporting its plastic waste to poor countries. The landmark agreement, reached on Friday, November 17, will prohibit the 27 EU member states from sending their plastic waste outside the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a group of wealthy nations.
Stricter Conditions for Plastic Waste Exports

Under the tentative agreement, plastic waste exports to the 38 OECD countries will also be subject to stricter conditions. These include an obligation to apply the prior written notification and consent procedure, as well as closer compliance monitoring. The aim of these measures is to ensure that plastic waste is managed in an environmentally sound manner and does not cause harm to human health.
Ensuring Proper Waste Management
The EU Parliament rapporteur, Pernille Weiss, welcomed the agreement, stating that the EU will finally assume responsibility for its plastic waste by banning its export to non-OECD countries. She emphasized the importance of proper waste management to prevent harm to the environment and human health.
Global Plastic Production on the Rise
According to EU data, the global production of plastic has grown exponentially from 1.5 million tonnes in 1950 to 359 million tonnes in 2018. To address this issue, the EU has set a target to recycle 55% of plastic packaging waste by 2030 as part of its Green Deal initiative.
Collaboration and Monitoring
The EU Commission has announced plans to establish a group to coordinate the actions of member countries in detecting and preventing illegal shipments of plastic waste. This collaborative effort will be crucial in ensuring the effectiveness of the new regulations.
Towards a Plastic-Free Future
The EU's decision to stop exporting plastic waste to poor countries is a significant step towards reducing plastic pollution and promoting responsible waste management. By implementing stricter conditions for plastic waste exports and prioritizing recycling, the EU is setting an example for other nations in the fight against plastic pollution. This agreement marks a positive development in the global efforts to create a more sustainable and plastic-free future.
