Government Anticipates Prompt Cooperation from Social Media Companies for Content Removal

The government is urging social media platforms to swiftly remove content that breaches regulations, including misinformation, according to IT Secretary S Krishnan. He noted that most intermediaries understand the legal framework they operate within. Social media companies are expected to promptly address deepfakes and prohibited content once flagged. Safe harbour provisions are not applicable if misinformation is not quickly addressed.

Government Expects Quick Action from Social Media Firms

Krishnan mentioned that the cooperation from social media companies regarding misinformation is generally substantial. He stated, "...you would find that what we require them to take down is a very, very miniscule fraction of the total number of cases that they take down because a lot of content is violative of their own community guidelines, and that includes misrepresentation," during a Ficci event.

Social Media Responsibilities and Challenges

Despite the overall cooperation, Krishnan pointed out that sometimes actions are not taken swiftly enough. This delay can lead to further complications in a country like India, where certain situations can become volatile due to such content. He emphasised the need for faster collaboration and understanding of the country's sensitivities by social media intermediaries.

He acknowledged that intermediaries in India have largely grasped the essence of the legal framework and often act voluntarily on such content. However, he stressed the importance of timely action to prevent exacerbating volatile situations.

Potential Tariff Implications

Regarding potential tariff implications for India following Donald Trump's election win in the US, Krishnan stated, "We are watching those developments very closely." He suggested there might be opportunities for India and highlighted the need to be prepared to capitalise on any potential advantages.

Krishnan also mentioned that while some tariffs might target Indian products, he does not believe India will be the primary focus. The situation requires careful monitoring to navigate any challenges or opportunities that may arise from these developments.

The government's expectation for prompt action from social media companies reflects its commitment to maintaining order and addressing misinformation effectively. By ensuring swift removal of harmful content, it aims to mitigate potential risks associated with volatile situations in the country.
