RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das stated that lower inflation benefits farmers, addressing concerns about the policy focus on controlling price rises. Speaking at a Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry event, Das highlighted the challenge policymakers face in balancing consumer and farmer interests.

Farmers as Consumers
Das emphasised that farmers are also consumers who purchase various goods for daily living. "Let us also remember, that the farmer is also a consumer. Apart from wheat, he buys so many other things for his day to day living. It is also in the interest of farmers to have a low inflation," he said.
His comments come after election results showed setbacks for the ruling BJP in areas like Maharashtra, where onion growers were dissatisfied. Analysts linked this to the government's pro-consumer policies that affected farmer incomes.
Balancing Interests
Das noted that governments must balance the interests of both farmers and consumers. He described this as a complex task, similar to the RBI's challenges with exchange rate management. "Any government has to move forward in a balanced manner, and weigh in the interest of the farmers with that of the consumers. It's a complicated and complex task," he said.
He explained that reducing headline inflation from 6% to 4% would boost the purchasing power of India's 140 crore citizens. This increase in purchasing power would positively impact consumption, growth, and employment.
Ongoing Challenges
Despite some successes, Das acknowledged that significant work remains in the agriculture sector. He pointed out the need for improvements in supply chains and value chain frameworks. "A lot of achievements have been made, but agriculture sector there is still a lot of work to be done especially with regard to improvement of the supply chains and the value chain framework," he said.
Additionally, Das mentioned that the agriculture sector has become more climate resilient in recent years. This resilience is crucial for sustaining agricultural productivity amid changing climate conditions.
The governor's remarks underscore the importance of considering both consumer and farmer needs in policy decisions. Lower inflation not only helps consumers but also supports farmers by increasing their overall purchasing power.
As India continues to navigate these challenges, balancing multiple objectives remains essential for sustainable growth and development.
