A fire incident at the Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand, operated by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), resulted in 23 workers being hospitalized due to smoke inhalation on Saturday morning. The event occurred amidst scheduled maintenance activities within the facility's mixed gas pipeline, which supplies gas to the re-heating furnace of the hot strip mill. This unfortunate incident underscores the risks associated with industrial operations and the importance of stringent safety measures.

The workers affected, including some contractual staff, were promptly attended to following their exposure to smoke during their work in the re-heating furnace area of the hot strip mill. As a precautionary step, they were observed at the Bokaro General Hospital and were later discharged the same evening without any casualties reported. SAIL detailed that the fire was sparked by residual naphtha, sulphur, and tar—substances known for their high flammability—during a procedure to replace a compensator in the pipeline. Fortunately, the fire was successfully extinguished.
Further investigations into the incident revealed no evidence of gas leakage, as confirmed by gas analyser tests. Senior officers from the Bokaro district administration made visits to both the plant and the hospital to oversee the situation and response measures.
SAIL's Commitment to Safety
In light of this event, SAIL reaffirmed its dedication to the safety and well-being of its employees. The company highlighted its ongoing efforts to educate its workforce on safety protocols and ensure adherence to established safety guidelines. SAIL, recognized as a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), stands as one of India's leading steel producers with operations spanning across five integrated plants—including Bokaro Steel Plant—and three special steel plants primarily located in the eastern and central regions of India.
The Bokaro Steel Plant is notable for its production of a wide range of flat products such as hot rolled coils, plates, sheets, cold rolled coils and sheets, tin mill black plates (TMBP), and galvanised plain as well as corrugated sheets. This incident brings to light the critical nature of maintaining rigorous safety standards in industrial environments to prevent accidents and ensure the protection of workers.
SAIL's proactive approach in handling this incident, coupled with its ongoing commitment to worker safety, underscores the importance of continuous improvement in safety practices within industrial operations. The company's swift response and thorough investigation into the matter reflect its dedication to upholding high safety standards across its operations.
