The first solar eclipse of 2025 will occur on March 29, offering a rare opportunity to witness the Moon's movement between the Earth and the Sun. It will be a partial solar eclipse. The Moon will partially cover the Sun during this event, casting a shadow on specific regions of the Earth.
What is Partial Solar Eclipse?
A solar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. Solar eclipses are partial, complete, or annular.

A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth but does not cover the Sun completely, only a part of the Sun remains dark. The Moon only covers a piece of the Earth's surface during this kind of eclipse because the Sun, Moon, and Earth are not exactly lined up. As a result, the Sun seems to be partially hidden from some parts of the blue planet.
During a partial solar eclipse, spectators in the path of the partial shadow, which is known as the penumbra, would see the Sun appear to have a "bite" taken out of it.
Solar Eclipse 2025: Date and Time
The first solar eclipse of 2025 will take place on Saturday, March 29. The eclipse will start at 4:50 AM EDT (2:20 PM IST), peak at around 6:47 AM EDT, and come to an end around 8:43 AM EDT.
In India, the eclipse will begin at 2:20 PM IST and reach its peak at 4:17 PM IST.
Surya Grahan 2025 On Chaitra Amavasya
The solar eclipse not only has astronomical importance but it also has religious significance. Hinduism observes Sutak Kaal prior to the eclipse, during which a lot of activities are forbidden. Furthermore, the first solar eclipse of the year is scheduled to occur on Chaitra Amavasya. Whether this solar eclipse can be seen from India? Or if not, whether its Sutak Kaal will be valid in such a scenario?
Can India See Solar Eclipse on March 29?
Unfortunately, India will not be able to view the solar eclipse on March 29. It will be a partial eclipse, not a complete one, and as a result, its alignment will be such that the eclipsed portion will not fall in India. The first solar eclipse of 2025 will not be seen from India due to time differences and the event's positioning.
Surya Grahan: Sutak Kaal on 29 March
The Sutak Kaal of the eclipse is the time that is considered inauspicious from the religious point of view. Many works are also prohibited during the Sutak period. The Sutak will start from 9am to 12pm as per the Indian time before the eclipse. However, the Sutak period is valid only when the solar eclipse can be seen. The solar eclipse will not be visible in India, hence its Sutak period will also not be valid.
Where Will Scholar Eclipse Be Visible?
The first of two solar eclipses in the year 2025 will only be visible in certain parts of the earth. The solar eclipse will be visible from Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. However, because it will happen exactly around Sunrise, spectators in North America will have the best viewing experience.
Precautions:
Take the following safety measures when a solar eclipse occurs:
- Avoid staring at the Sun directly with naked eyes: Even in the event of a partial eclipse, avoid looking directly at the Sun without appropriate eye protection. Direct exposure to the Sun can harm your eyes permanently, even resulting in blindness.
- Avoid wearing regular Sunglasses. Only wear solar eclipse glasses that are certified to satisfy international safety standards and are specifically made for viewing the Sun (ISO 12312-2) or use handheld solar viewers.
- To see the eclipse safely if you don't have eclipse glasses, use a pinhole projector or another indirect viewing technique.
- Do not use homemade filters.
- Supervise children with solar viewers.
- If you are outside during the eclipse, do not directly expose yourself to sunlight. To avoid direct solar exposure, find some shade or use an umbrella.
