The G7 foreign ministers recently concluded their meeting in Capri, Italy, with a strong message regarding the Indo-Pacific region and China's role in the global arena. From April 17 to 19, the ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the High Representative of the European Union gathered to discuss various international issues, including the economic practices of China and its impact on global markets.

During this assembly, the G7 ministers expressed their willingness to work with China, acknowledging its potential as "a key interlocutor in addressing global challenges." They emphasized that their strategies are not aimed at hindering China's economic development but voiced concerns over China's nonmarket policies. These practices, according to the G7 communique, lead to harmful overcapacity affecting workers and industries worldwide.
The ministers highlighted the necessity for a level playing field and a business environment that is transparent, predictable, and fair. They stressed the importance of adhering to a rules-based multilateral trading system to safeguard workers and companies from unfair practices such as forced technology transfer or illegitimate data disclosure.
Furthermore, the G7 bloc pledged to protect its workers and businesses from practices that create supply chain vulnerabilities and expose them to economic coercion. The communique also touched upon the critical situation in the East and South China Seas, condemning any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo through force or coercion.
China's maritime claims in the South China Sea were specifically addressed, with the G7 stating there is no legal basis for such claims. The communique opposed China's militarization activities in the area and underscored the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for international security and prosperity.
The Indo-Pacific region was recognized as a vital engine for global growth, housing more than half of the world's population. The G7's commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, grounded on respect for international law and principles such as territorial integrity and peaceful resolution of disputes, was reiterated.
This meeting underscores the complex dynamics between major global powers and their approach towards ensuring economic fairness and security in strategically important regions. The G7's stance reflects a collective effort to engage with China on common grounds while addressing practices deemed harmful to global economic resilience.
