G7 Meeting Concludes with Consensus Despite Tensions Over Trump's Tariffs

The final day of discussions among the Group of 7 (G7) industrialised democracies was overshadowed by US President Donald Trump's trade and foreign policies. Despite these tensions, diplomats indicated they were close to agreeing on a joint statement after extensive negotiations. Representatives from three countries mentioned they were nearly finished with a consensus document reflecting the group's positions.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly expressed optimism, stating, "There is a great deal of unity within the G7." She added that they discussed various topics, including support for a US-proposed ceasefire in Ukraine, which awaits a Russian response. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy noted that the group reached common ground on issues like Ukraine, the Middle East, African conflicts, and China's activities in the South China Sea.

Trade Tensions and Diplomatic Efforts

Trump's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium has disrupted the G7's unity. All members are affected, but Canada feels it most acutely due to its proximity to the US and Trump's derogatory remarks. The escalating trade war has further strained US relations with its allies, already tense over Trump's stance on Russia's actions in Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced numerous complaints during his first official visit to Canada and a G7 event. Several countries, especially Japan, urged him to influence Trump to avoid harsh trade measures against them. However, Trump remains firm on applying maximum pressure on American allies.

Canada's Firm Stance on Sovereignty

Rubio had a separate meeting with Joly, who described their conversation as "frank," indicating blunt discussions. Joly emphasised Canada's sovereignty is non-negotiable and discussed tariffs and trade at length. She reiterated Canada's sovereignty is not up for debate after Trump suggested Canada could become a US state.

Joly stressed that Canadians are proud and expect respect for their sovereignty. Rubio downplayed Trump's comments as merely an idea he thought was good. Joly noted that many allies at the meeting considered Trump's remarks a joke but insisted it was no laughing matter for Canadians.

Support for US Peace Plan in Ukraine

The G7 meeting agenda included discussions on China, the Middle East, and Africa. However, one major topic was a potential 30-day ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine conflict brokered by Rubio earlier in the week. Ukraine agreed to the US proposal, while Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed conditional agreement.

Joly confirmed G7 support for the peace plan: "All G7 foreign ministers agree with the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire that is supported by Ukrainians." Lammy echoed this sentiment, emphasising unity for an unconditional ceasefire. Despite this consensus, Trump's desire to reintegrate Russia into the group remains concerning for G7 members.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock urged G7 nations to remain calm and posted support for Canada on social media alongside EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. "We've got your back," she wrote, highlighting solidarity with Canada amidst ongoing tensions.
