Today is Good Friday, an important day for Christians both in India and around the world. It's a time when people remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Fridays will be followed by Easter Sunday, which will be celebrated on 20th April. While Good Friday is both a bank holiday and a public holiday in India, people are curious to know whether the stock market is open on Good Friday 2025. Here's everything you need to know about the BSE and NSE trading status today.
Is the stock market open today, Good Friday 2025?
No, the Indian stock market is closed on Good Friday, April 18, 2025. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain shut for the entire day. There will be no trading activity in the equity segment, equity derivatives, and SLB segment. This holiday is part of the list of stock market holidays 2025 published by both exchanges earlier in the year.
What About Commodity Markets?
While stock exchanges like BSE and NSE are closed, the commodity derivatives market (run by the Multi Commodity Exchange - MCX) will be closed for the morning session but will reopen for evening trading from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM.
So, if you're an investor involved in gold, silver, crude oil, or agri-commodities, you'll still be able to trade during the second half of the day.
Stock Market to Resume on Monday
Since Good Friday is a market holiday, trading will remain completely shut for the day. Normal trading hours will resume on Monday, April 21, 2025, as per the usual schedule.
This makes it a three-day weekend for traders and investors, so it's advisable to plan your trades accordingly and keep an eye on any global developments during this period.
Banks & Financial Services Closed Too
Apart from the stock market holiday, Good Friday is also a bank holiday in India. Most banks and financial institutions will also remain closed on Good Friday, especially in states where it's recognised as an official holiday. So there might be some delays in fund transfers and other financial transactions. Online services will remain operational.

Why is Good Friday a Holiday for Indian Stock Markets?
Good Friday is observed to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is marked as a solemn occasion in many Christian-majority regions. In India, it is considered a market holiday due to its significance, and hence both BSE and NSE remain non-operational on this day every year.
Upcoming Stock Market Holidays in 2025
In April 2025 the stock market was closed for three days: on April 10th for Mahavir Jayanti, April 14th for Ambedkar Jayanti, and it will be closed today, i.e., April 18. The next stock market holiday will fall on May 1st, which is celebrated as Maharashtra Day.
