In a major boost for cricket fans in Bengaluru, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to return to the city's M Chinnaswamy Stadium after the Karnataka government granted conditional approval to host IPL and other international matches. The state government cleared the venue after the stadium management demonstrated compliance with stipulated terms and conditions, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) said in a press release on Saturday, January 17.
M Chinnaswamy Stadium lost its rights to host IPL and other matches, followed by a tragic stampede outside the venue in June 2025. The stadium received approval to host IPL and other international cricket matches only under strict conditions. The development came only after approval from the home department, city police commissioner, etc.

IPL 2026
The development is likely to bring optimism among Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans. The IPL season 2026 is set to start on March 26, leaving KSCA a tight window to complete pending work. Govt agencies have already checked progress at the venue and, according to the home department's letter, these agencies are satisfied so far with the measures taken by the association.
The KSCA has assured the state government that all the mandatory safety measures will be taken and infrastructure upgrades will be made before the beginning of the IPL. The home department's communication has listed four broad conditions for the M Chinnaswamy Stadium IPL approval.
KSCA must carry out every recommendation from the Justice D Cunha report and also meet all standards normally required for international fixtures. Monitoring authorities will track work regularly, and any serious deviation from the sanctioned plan could lead to the permission itself being revisited.
Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief To Head Review Committee
To supervise the upgrades at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium IPL venue, an expert review committee headed by Greater Bengaluru Authority chief M Maheshwar Rao has been in place since last month. The panel visited the stadium earlier this week, met KSCA secretary Santosh Menon and other officials, and vetted the timelines promised for all pending civil and safety work.
The Justice D Cunha report, ordered after the June incident, had put forward 17 specific recommendations to improve spectator protection. KSCA has stated that 15 of these suggestions are practical and says work on those items has already begun. The association also says it already meets norms issued by Bescom and the health department, while March 15 has been fixed internally as the deadline to finish the remaining tasks.
KSCA Welcomes The Decision
KSCA has publicly welcomed the conditional approval for the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to host cricket matches. "KSCA is confident of fulfilling all the stipulated conditions. The association has already presented a detailed compliance roadmap to the Expert Review Committee and remains fully committed to implementing all safety, security, and crowd-management measures in letter and spirit," India Today quoted KSCA's statement in press release.
The home department has underlined that KSCA must work closely with all supervisory authorities while executing this roadmap. Inspecting bodies will conduct periodic checks, and their feedback will shape further permissions. The letter also notes that the present approval depends on the progress verified so far by various govt agencies, which have endorsed the steps already taken at the venue.
