Google's $15 billion investment in an AI hub in Visakhapatnam aims to boost India's digital economy and create jobs, aligning with the nation's vision for 2047.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed plans to establish the first Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, India. This initiative involves a substantial $15 billion investment. The announcement was made during Bharat AI Shakti, an event held in New Delhi. The hub will feature gigawatt-scale computing capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and extensive energy infrastructure.
The project is set to transform Visakhapatnam into a global centre for AI innovation. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, highlighted that the facility would not only serve India but also other regions in Asia and beyond. He emphasised that this investment reflects Google's dedication to India's digital advancement and sustainable data infrastructure.

Strategic Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed that the project aligns with India's vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's insistence on Google's presence in India. Naidu drew parallels with Microsoft's earlier establishment in Hyderabad, underscoring the potential impact of Google's entry into Visakhapatnam.
Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw noted the significance of Google's investment in supporting India's AI Mission. He stressed its role in enhancing IT professionals' skills and boosting the digital economy. Vaishnaw also encouraged Google to explore opportunities in the Andaman Islands for future undersea cable networks.
Collaboration Reflects Progressive Governance
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described the collaboration as a testament to harmonious policymaking and governance. She stated that projects like this highlight India's readiness to lead technological advancements globally. Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh added that this partnership showcases India's leadership potential on the world stage.
The agreement between Google and Andhra Pradesh serves as the anchor project for the AI City Vizag initiative. This includes a 1 GW hyperscale data centre campus with clean energy integration and innovation ecosystems. The project aims to create up to 1.8 lakh jobs, positioning Visakhapatnam as a cornerstone of India's AI-driven future.
Pichai shared his excitement about the development on social media, stating: "Great to speak with India PM @narendramodi @OfficialINDIAai to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development." This statement underscores the importance of this initiative for both Google and India.
