Google plans to collaborate with the Tamil Nadu government on manufacturing Pixel 8 phones, skill development, and creating an industrial ecosystem for MSMEs to develop scalable AI solutions. The announcement came after a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Google and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin at Google's Mountain View office in California.

The MoU involves Google working with Guidance, a state-backed nodal agency, to promote investments for developing a robust AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu. This includes providing access to advanced technologies and resources to empower individuals, businesses, and government entities to leverage AI for inclusive growth and progress.
Focus on Manufacturing and Skill Development
Google will explore collaborations on manufacturing Pixel 8 phones in Tamil Nadu through local partnerships. The "Made in India" Pixel 8 devices are already being manufactured in the state. Additionally, Google aims to upskill Tamil Nadu's workforce with AI capabilities and explore AI learning initiatives under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme.
Industries Minister TRB Rajaa expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "We are happy to collaborate with Google on advanced manufacturing, including the recently announced Made in India Pixel 8 phone being manufactured in Tamil Nadu." He added that the MoU would explore key AI initiatives under the Tamil Nadu AI labs.
Empowering Startups and Innovation
Google will work with the startup ecosystem in Tamil Nadu to offer mentorship and networking opportunities with Google experts and industry leaders. Amit Zavery, Google Cloud Vice-President and Head of Platform, said, "We are thrilled to partner with the Tamil Nadu government on their journey towards an AI-powered future."
Zavery emphasized their shared commitment to fostering inclusive growth and technological progress through AI. "We look forward to building a thriving AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu - one that not only drives innovation and creates opportunities but also empowers individuals with skills they need to succeed in the digital age," he said.
Leveraging Google Cloud's AI
The collaboration will also enable the government to leverage Google Cloud's AI on the open networks marketplace. These efforts aim to streamline access, automate processes, enhance decision-making, and promote innovation through technology adoption.
The MoU signed today will explore key AI initiatives under the Tamil Nadu AI labs. Through the Chief Minister's visionary Naan Mudhalvan programme we aim to equip the youth of Tamil Nadu with future-ready AI skills and spark innovation across key sectors -- startups, mobility, healthcare and other real-world challenges," Rajaa said.
Google's statement highlighted that this partnership underscores their commitment to fostering inclusive growth and technological progress through AI. The collaboration aims to build a thriving AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu that drives innovation and creates opportunities while empowering individuals with necessary digital skills.
This partnership between Google and the Government of Tamil Nadu marks a significant step towards leveraging advanced technologies for inclusive growth. The focus on manufacturing, skill development, and innovation aims to create a future-ready workforce and drive technological progress in the state.
