In a move that has sparked concerns amid heightened global tensions, Google has made cuts in its news division, leaving around 40 to 45 workers without jobs. The layoffs come at a time when reliable news sources are in high demand due to ongoing conflicts and misinformation concerns.
Google's news division, which serves as a hub for thousands of publishers and magazines, has been significantly downsized, according to a spokesperson from the Alphabet Workers Union. Google itself has confirmed the cuts but hasn't provided an exact number, emphasizing that they still have hundreds of staff dedicated to their news product.

In an interview with CNBC, a Google spokesperson stated, 'We're deeply committed to a vibrant information ecosystem, and news is a part of that long-term investment. We've made some internal changes to streamline our organization. A small number of employees were impacted. We're supporting everyone with a transition period, outplacement services, and severance as they look for new opportunities at Google and beyond.'
The timing of these job cuts is particularly sensitive as they coincide with the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which has taken thousands of lives on both sides and followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine 20 months ago. Both of these events have led to a surge in misinformation on the internet, making platforms like Google crucial for providing accurate and up-to-date news.
Sen. Michael Bennet from Colorado has recently requested information from major tech companies, including Google, on their efforts to combat false and misleading content related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Additionally, European Union industry chief Thierry Breton has called on companies like Google to take stricter measures against disinformation, reminding them of the content moderation requirements under the EU's Digital Services Act. Google assured that these changes won't impact their efforts to combat misinformation.
As misinformation continues to be a pressing concern, some tech companies are increasing their content moderation teams to combat the spread of false information.
Furthermore, Canada and other countries are considering legislation that would require tech platforms to compensate publishers for their work, further adding to the challenges facing tech giants.
These job cuts in Google News follow a series of layoffs across various parts of the company this year. In January, Google announced the elimination of 12,000 jobs, affecting approximately 6% of its full-time workforce. Last month, hundreds of positions were cut from the company's recruiting organization.
Amid ongoing global conflicts and the battle against misinformation, the downsizing of Google's news division has raised questions about the evolving landscape of online news and the role of tech companies in providing accurate and reliable information to the public.
