The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is set to collaborate with Italy's Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection. This partnership, approved by the Union Cabinet on December 6, focuses on landslide forecasting and early warning systems. The Ministry of Mines announced this development, highlighting the significance of enhancing India's landslide early warning capabilities to international standards.

Enhancing Landslide Forecasting
The collaboration aims to improve skills and knowledge in landslide prediction through joint research efforts. By integrating GSI's existing landslide data with PM Gati Shakti, the initiative seeks to bolster resilience in vulnerable hilly regions. This integration will aid in better prediction and mitigation of landslide-related damages, preventing incidents like the Wayanad landslide in Kerala.
Developing Advanced Systems
Plans are underway to expand the forecasting system to cover more districts with enhanced spatial and temporal resolution. This expansion targets highly landslide-prone areas, aiming for comprehensive coverage. The National Landslide Forecasting Centre (NLFC) in Kolkata is pivotal in these efforts, developing regional early warning systems across all landslide-prone states.
Currently, NLFC provides daily live forecast reports for Kalimpong and Darjeeling in West Bengal and Nilgiri in Tamil Nadu. Ground testing of bulletins is also ongoing in 13 districts. These efforts are crucial for sustainable development and environmental protection in hill areas, ensuring safety and reducing vulnerability.
The LEWS will serve as a vital tool to safeguard lives and prevent destruction in these regions. By enhancing the country's landslide early warning systems, India aims to align with global standards, ensuring better preparedness against natural disasters.
