In a significant crackdown on several coaching institutes, the Union Government has taken strict action against four institutes for making false and inflated claims about their alumni clearing the prestigious IAS (Indian Administrative Services) examination. Additionally, institutes providing training for the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) and JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) may also face consequences.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of ₹1 lakh each on Chahal Academy, IQRA IAS, and Rau's IAS Study Circle. While these institutes have acknowledged the fines, the verdict on Unacademy IAS is still pending.

The investigation revealed that numerous coaching institutes boasted of having an excessive number of alumni who successfully passed the IAS examination. In contrast, only 933 candidates were selected after the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) 2022 final results. This indicates that these coaching institutes were claiming more than 3.5 times the actual number of successful candidates.
The CCPA is actively probing 20 IAS coaching institutes, including prominent names like Byju's IAS, Drishti IAS, Next IAS, Khan Study Group IAS, Analog IAS, Vajirao & Reddy Institute, Yojana IAS, ALS IAS, Vision IAS, Plutus IAS, Shankar IAS, and Sriram IAS. While some institutes have already paid the fines, others are planning legal challenges, and several hearings are currently ongoing.
The CCPA's investigation also uncovered instances where five different institutes falsely claimed the same person as their alumni. Such practices are in violation of the Consumer Protection Act, as these coaching institutes did not disclose the free interview sessions in their advertisements, which can be quite lengthy.
Under current advertising guidelines, the first offense incurs a Rs 10 lakh penalty, while subsequent violations result in a Rs 50 lakh penalty. Non-compliance with CCPA orders may lead to more severe actions against these institutes.
The Union Government's actions are expected to serve as a stern warning to coaching institutes that engage in misleading advertising, with a commitment to protecting the interests of aspirants pursuing competitive exams in India.
