The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has been directed by the Centre to reassess the Nayakkarpatti tungsten mine in Tamil Nadu. The aim is to consider redefining the block's boundary to exclude a biodiversity site. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu government has been asked to pause issuing the Letter of Intent to Hindustan Zinc Ltd, the preferred bidder for this block.

Concerns have arisen following the declaration of Hindustan Zinc Ltd as the preferred bidder. Several representations have been made against auctioning this block due to its inclusion of a biodiversity heritage site. The mines ministry had previously stated that inputs from Tamil Nadu were considered before auctioning, and no objections were received from any source, including the state government.
Opposition from State Authorities
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revoke the award of tungsten mining rights in Madurai district. Stalin emphasised that mining would not be permitted due to concerns about the biodiversity heritage site and public opposition. The Nayakkarpatti tungsten block spans over 20.16 square kilometres and was proposed for auction in February.
The mines ministry clarified that the block was auctioned as a composite licence block. This means it has undergone partial exploration, and the successful bidder must conduct further exploration before a mining lease is granted. Despite prior consultations with Tamil Nadu's government, no communication regarding opposition was received before the auction.
Environmental Concerns and Future Steps
The decision to re-evaluate the Nayakkarpatti tungsten mine comes amid environmental concerns and public resistance. The Centre's move to potentially redefine the block's boundary reflects an effort to address these issues while considering economic interests. The outcome of this reassessment will determine future actions regarding mining activities in this region.
As discussions continue, stakeholders await further developments on whether mining activities will proceed or if adjustments will be made to protect the biodiversity site. The situation highlights the ongoing balance between resource extraction and environmental preservation in India.
