Government Elevates NHPC and SJVN to Navratna Companies

The government has awarded Navratna status to NHPC, SJVN, and SECI. This move, announced by the Department of Public Enterprise Ministry of Finance on August 30, 2024, grants these public sector undertakings greater operational and financial autonomy.

NHPC, SJVN Now Navratna Firms

Faridabad-based NHPC, previously a Mini Ratna Category-I entity under the Ministry of Power, has been recognised for its significant contributions to India's power sector. "This is a historic moment for the NHPC and recognition of our remarkable financial and operational accomplishments," said NHPC CMD RK Chaudhary. The company has also diversified into wind and solar energy.

Navratna Status Benefits

The new status will enable NHPC to make faster decisions, increase efficiency, and empower its employees. It will also support major capital expenditure and investment plans, driving growth and expanding market reach for long-term gains.

Shimla-based SJVN has also received Navratna status from the government. In an exchange filing, the company stated, "Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Finance, Government of India vide its letter no PD-I26/0004/2024-DPE dated August 30, 2024, has granted Navratna Status to SJVN Limited." SJVN was incorporated on May 24, 1988, as a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

SECI's New Status

The Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) has also been granted Navratna status. SECI operates under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and serves as the central government's nodal agency for auctioning renewable energy projects.

NHPC's new status is expected to enhance its role in tapping India's hydropower potential. The company has been a key player in this sector and aims to continue its growth trajectory with the added benefits of Navratna status.

The recognition of these companies as Navratnas underscores their importance in India's energy landscape. It highlights their achievements and potential for further contributions to the country's renewable energy goals.

This development marks a significant milestone for NHPC, SJVN, and SECI. It reflects their operational excellence and strategic importance in India's public sector undertakings.
