During the Modi administration, post offices have undergone significant changes, aiming to become a crucial part of rural India's financial inclusion, particularly for women. Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani shared this information with the Rajya Sabha. He highlighted that post offices are being transformed to support rural communities financially.

Pemmasani noted that the introduction of India's Post Payments Bank has led to a substantial increase in women's accounts. While national banks typically have 20% of women's accounts, the Post Payments Bank has seen over 45% of such accounts opened. This shift underscores the government's commitment to empowering women financially.
Financial Inclusion and Technological Advancements
The government has invested Rs 5,700 crore in IT modernisation to enhance postal services. This investment includes providing 1.4 lakh mobile phones, 1.4 lakh thermal printers, and 3 lakh biometric devices to postmen. These tools enable postmen to function as mobile ATMs, reaching every household, especially those of housewives.
Pemmasani emphasised that government services should not solely be viewed as business ventures. Instead, they carry a moral and social responsibility to be accessible and affordable for everyone. This approach aims to ensure that essential services reach all sections of society.
Expansion and Accessibility of Post Offices
Since 2019, no post offices have been closed under the current government. In contrast, during the UPA's tenure, 700 post offices were shut down over ten years. The current administration has increased the number of post offices by approximately 10,500, bringing the total to 1.65 lakh. Of these, 90.1% are situated in rural and remote areas.
The government's objective is to have a post office within a minimum distance of 3 km from every village. With 1.65 lakh post offices now connected to villages across India, this goal is being realised effectively.
Empowering Women Through Export Centres
Post offices have existed since the 1800s, but it was PM Modi who envisioned them as export centres. The government has designed one product for each district to support self-help groups and empower women economically. This initiative has led to the creation of Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras (DNKs) in each district.
There are currently over 1,000 DNKs across India due to the success of this scheme. These centres provide continuous support for rural women, improving their livelihoods by facilitating the export of innovative rural products worldwide.
The DNKs have managed 2.2 lakh shipments and generated Rs 54 crores so far. This achievement highlights the positive impact of these centres on rural women's lives and their economic empowerment.
