The Gujarat forest department has signed three MoUs worth Rs 2,217 crore for carbon credit through the plantation of mangrove trees involving communities as part of the upcoming 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. Agreements have also been signed in the area of carbon credit through agro-forestry.
The Gujarat forest department has taken a significant step in the fight against climate change by signing three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 2,217 crore for carbon credit through the plantation of mangrove trees. This initiative involves the active participation of local communities and is a first-of-its-kind endeavor in the country.

Agreements in Agro-forestry and Carbon Sequestration
In addition to the mangrove plantation MoUs, the forest department has also signed agreements in the area of carbon credit through agro-forestry. This demonstrates the state's commitment to exploring various avenues for carbon sequestration and promoting sustainable land use practices.
Seminar on "Towards Net Zero"
As part of the upcoming 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, the state forest and environment department will organize a seminar on the theme of "Towards Net Zero" on January 12. The seminar aims to bring together global and national leaders to discuss India's national commitment to combating climate change and explore strategies for achieving net-zero emissions.
MoUs and Carbon Sequestration Potential
Apart from the MoUs, the Gujarat government is actively exploring the potential of carbon sequestration in wetlands. The Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation, an autonomous body of the forest department, is conducting a carbon study at four Ramsar sites in the state: Nal Sarovar, Thol, Khijdia, and Vadwana.
Dholera: A Greenfield Smart City and Semiconductor Hub
In a separate development, a one-day conclave will be organized from January 10 to 12 to discuss the potential of Dholera, a greenfield smart city, as a destination for smart business and a global hub for semiconductor industries. This event aims to showcase Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for Dholera as a world-class smart industrial city and an attractive investment destination.
Panel Discussions on Urbanization and ESDM
The conclave will feature panel discussions on various aspects of urbanization and the development of Dholera. Experts, policymakers, government officials, and industry leaders will come together to explore innovative solutions for establishing eco-friendly and well-planned cities. A session on "Dholera: India's First Semicon City in the Making" will delve into the potential for developing Dholera as a global hub for the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) industry.
The Gujarat government's initiatives in carbon credit, mangrove plantation, and the development of Dholera as a smart city demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development and economic growth. These efforts align with India's national goals of combating climate change and fostering economic progress.
