Cities of Karnataka will reportedly receive higher electricity bills starting April as the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has approved a proposal from the state's Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) to increase electricity tariffs, which will be effective from April 1, 2025.
Details of the Electricity Tariff Hike
The ESCOMs had initially proposed an increase ranging from Rs. 1 to Rs. 1.5 per unit to address their revenue fall. After thorough evaluation, KERC found the hike justified, although the exact rate of increase has not been specified in the available sources. This electricity tariff hike is being done mainly in response to rising operational costs and financial challenges faced by the power distribution companies. The adjustments are expected to stabilize electricity pricing and ensure the sustainability of power supply in Karnataka.

Impact of Electricity Tariff Hike on Consumers
The revised electricity tariffs are expected to affect both households and businesses across Karnataka. Consumers will receive higher electricity bills starting from April 1, which may lead to an increased cost of living. This hike adds to the financial burden on residents already struggling with recent bus and metro fare hikes.
Prior to approval, public consultations were conducted across regions served by BESCOM, MESCOM, JESCOM, and other power distribution companies. Despite these consultations, the electricity board decided to proceed with the tariff hike, stating the pressing financial needs of the ESCOMs to maintain electricity services across the state.
Previous Electricity Tariff Adjustments
It should be noted that in late 2024, electricity tariffs were reduced. However, the current financial challenges have necessitated a reversal, leading to the substantial hike approved for this year. With the new rates set to take effect from April 1, it is advisable for consumers to plan their budgets accordingly. Being mindful of electricity consumption and exploring energy-efficient practices can help mitigate the impact of the tariff increase.
Current Electricity Charges In Karnataka
As of the latest available data, electricity charges in Karnataka are structured based on consumption slabs. For domestic consumers, the first 100 units are billed at Rs.3.75 per unit. The subsequent 100 units (101-200) are charged at Rs.5.20 per unit, and any consumption beyond 200 units is billed at Rs.6.75 per unit.
