This achievement was announced by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) through a social media update on Thursday. The successful completion of this spacecraft docking, a key objective of ISRO's SpaDeX Mission initiated on December 31, was hailed as an "historic moment" by the space agency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to the ISRO team and the broader space community for their monumental success in demonstrating satellite space docking capabilities. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) describes docking as operations in which an active vehicle autonomously aligns and mates with another interface using its power. ISRO elaborated on its utility, noting that in-space docking technology is particularly valuable for missions involving multiple rocket launches aimed at achieving shared objectives.
Understanding the SpaDeX Mission and Docking Process
The SpaDeX mission, a pioneering endeavor by ISRO, was launched aboard a PSLV-C60 rocket carrying two small satellites named Chaser and Target. This mission was carefully designed to facilitate a controlled approach between the two satellites post-launch. Initially, the Target spacecraft was allowed to drift, creating a separation distance of 10-20 km from the Chaser. This separation was gradually reduced through a series of meticulously planned maneuvers, bringing the satellites closer in stages - from 5 km down to a mere 3 meters apart, eventually culminating in the successful docking.
ISRO detailed the docking procedure, stating, "Manoeuvre from 15m to 3m hold point completed. Docking initiated with precision, leading to successful spacecraft capture. Retraction completed smoothly, followed by rigidisation for stability. Docking successfully completed." This precision in the docking process underscores the technological prowess and strategic planning of ISRO's engineers and scientists. Following the docking, the successful separation of the SpaDeX satellites was another significant achievement, further underscoring India's growing capabilities in space exploration.
The final phase of the mission entailed the demonstration of electrical power transfer between the Chaser and Target satellites, a critical step before their undocking and the initiation of their respective payload operations.
