India and Russia are enhancing their trade relations, focusing on energy cooperation and addressing trade barriers. Despite U.S. tariffs and geopolitical challenges, both nations seek to increase exports and maintain a strong partnership.
India and Russia have decided to strengthen their trade relations, as confirmed by their foreign ministers during a meeting in Moscow. Despite the U.S. imposing high tariffs on Indian goods due to India's Russian oil purchases, both nations are keen on expanding their bilateral trade.
Indian products face U.S. tariffs reaching up to 50%, among the highest imposed by Washington. This is a result of New Delhi's increased acquisition of Russian oil. Western countries argue that India's purchases support Moscow's war efforts in Ukraine, but India maintains these transactions are purely commercial.

Focus on Energy Cooperation
Sergei Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister, highlighted successful cooperation in hydrocarbons with India. He mentioned mutual interest in joint energy projects within Russia, including the Far East and Arctic shelf regions. Lavrov stated, "We have good results in cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector, in the supply of Russian oil to the Indian market."
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India's Foreign Minister, emphasized that India-Russia relations have been stable since World War Two. He referred to their longstanding friendship dating back to Soviet times. The two countries aim to increase India's exports to Russia as part of their trade expansion goals.
Addressing Trade Barriers
Jaishankar noted that expanding trade requires addressing non-tariff barriers and regulatory challenges swiftly. He stated that boosting Indian exports in sectors like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and textiles could help correct current trade imbalances with Russia.
After Western sanctions over Ukraine, Russia redirected its oil exports primarily to China and India. These two countries are now the largest buyers of Russian oil. Despite U.S. pressure, Russia plans to continue supplying oil to India and hopes for trilateral talks with India and China soon.
The Russian embassy in New Delhi reiterated this intention on Wednesday. They expressed optimism about ongoing oil supplies despite external pressures from the United States.
This development underscores the enduring partnership between India and Russia amid global geopolitical tensions. Both nations remain committed to enhancing their economic ties while navigating international challenges.
