Indias government official reaffirms the countrys dedication to achieving net zero emissions by 2070, emphasizing its responsible approach to carbon emissions and its significant progress in renewable energy.
In a significant statement, a senior Indian government official declared that India will not accept any unjustified mandates on carbon emissions. However, the country remains committed to delivering more than the commitments it makes in its pursuit of net zero emissions by 2070.

India's Net Zero Goal and Historical Responsibility
Speaking at the Aavaana-Startup India ClimateTech Challenge event, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh emphasized India's mandate to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. He highlighted India's position that it is not historically responsible for carbon emissions, especially on a per capita basis. Despite this, India is committed to delivering beyond its commitments.
India's Progress in Renewable Energy
Singh highlighted India's significant progress in renewable energy, noting that the country has built the world's fourth-largest renewable energy capacity of 180 gigawatts. This achievement puts India well ahead of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets.
Role of Startups in India's Energy Transition
As India moves towards a greener future, Singh emphasized the crucial role that startups will play through their innovation in the journey of energy transition. He believes that startups can contribute significantly to India's efforts in reducing carbon emissions and achieving its net zero goals.
Aavaana-Startup India ClimateTech Challenge Winners
During the event, Avaana Capital declared three winners of the Aavaana-Startup India ClimateTech Challenge. The winners were selected by a panel of jury chaired by G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant.
India's Pivotal Role in Carbon Mitigation and Adaptation
Anjali Bansal, founding partner of Avaana Climate and Sustainability Funds, stressed India's pivotal role in both mitigating carbon emissions and adapting to climate change. She emphasized the importance of technology in facilitating this transition.
Balancing Sustainability and Environmental Impact
Ranjan Bhattacharya, MD, Chief of Staff, and Head of Strategy at HSBC India, cautioned against creating new problems while solving sustainability issues. He cited an example of a wooden toothbrush wrapped in paper being given to hotel guests, which addresses plastic waste but may lead to deforestation.
India's commitment to net zero emissions by 2070 reflects its dedication to addressing climate change. While rejecting unjustified mandates on carbon emissions, India remains committed to delivering beyond its commitments. The country's progress in renewable energy and the role of startups in energy transition are crucial elements in India's journey towards a greener future.
