New Delhi, May 28 - The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has raised concerns regarding the stagnation in display manufacturing development in India, despite significant capital expenditure (capex) support from both the government and state governments. The ICEA, which counts major industry players such as Apple, Foxconn, Dixon, Lava, and Vivo among its members, highlighted the paradox of India being the world's third-largest consumer of display products yet having negligible domestic production capabilities.

According to ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo, despite the substantial 50 percent capex support on a parri passu basis provided by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and further assistance from state governments, progress has been limited to display assembly. This is concerning given that displays account for a significant 15-20 percent of the Bill of Material, a figure comparable to other critical components like logic, memory, and semiconductors.
Mohindroo emphasized the critical need for India to advance in this sector, viewing the absence of display manufacturing as an opportunity for international companies to diversify their supply chains. This move could not only meet domestic demand but also bolster exports from India. The ICEA is committed to transforming India into a leading nation in display manufacturing.
The government's engagement with potential investors such as the Vedanta Group, which has expressed interest in establishing a display fabrication unit in India, was also mentioned. However, their proposal is currently under review.
In an effort to promote India as a future hub for display manufacturing and attract global investments into this sector, the ICEA recently spearheaded an industry delegation to the prestigious SID Display Week event in San Jose, US. This initiative aims to showcase India's potential and readiness to become a key player in the global display manufacturing landscape.
