India and Ethiopia Strengthen Historical Ties with Strategic Partnership During PM Modi's Visit

India and Ethiopia have elevated their historical ties to a Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali held extensive discussions on bilateral and mutual interests. Modi, on his first official visit to Ethiopia, received a ceremonial welcome at the National Palace. The leaders met privately before engaging in delegation-level talks, reflecting the vibrant relationship between the two nations.

Modi expressed gratitude to Ethiopia for its support following the Pahalgam terror attack. He emphasised the importance of solidarity from friendly countries in combating terrorism. Both leaders acknowledged their roles as Global South partners, committed to fostering an inclusive world. They assessed progress in various areas, including trade, technology, education, and defence cooperation.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The discussions also covered cooperation in digital infrastructure, mining, critical minerals, and clean energy. Modi announced plans to double student scholarships for Ethiopians in India. He highlighted the shared history and cultural exchanges between the two countries over thousands of years. Both nations are democratic powers dedicated to peace and humanity's welfare.

Modi noted Ethiopia's significance as the African Union's headquarters, making it a hub for African diplomacy. In 2023, India ensured the African Union's inclusion as a G20 member during its presidency. Modi invited Abiy to visit India, which he accepted. The leaders called for increased cooperation on climate change, renewable energy, and disaster risk reduction.

Economic Growth and Cooperation

Abiy highlighted Ethiopia's strong economic performance, with a 9.2% GDP growth last year and an expected 10.3% this year. He noted India's role as a leading source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Ethiopia, with over 615 Indian companies investing there. Abiy appreciated India's consistent message that Africa's priorities should guide partnerships.

Ethiopia awarded Modi its highest honour, The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, marking him as the first global head of state to receive it. Following their talks, the leaders witnessed the exchange of three MoUs related to UN Peacekeeping Operations Training, Customs Matters Assistance, and establishing a Data Centre at Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Cultural Exchanges and Future Plans

The two sides announced upgrading ties to a Strategic Partnership, debt restructuring under G20, more ICCR scholarships for Ethiopians, AI short courses, and support for maternal and neonatal healthcare. Modi suggested enhancing ties in food security, health security, capacity building, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

Modi visited Friendship Park and Friendship Square in Addis Ababa with Abiy. The Ethiopian Prime Minister hosted a banquet in Modi's honour. Modi was warmly received by his Ethiopian counterpart at the airport with a colourful welcome. During informal talks, Abiy introduced Modi to Ethiopian coffee varieties.

At Addis Ababa airport, Modi participated in a traditional Coffee Ceremony with Abiy Ahmed Ali. "The ceremony beautifully highlights Ethiopia’s rich heritage," Modi said. In a unique gesture, Abiy drove Modi to the hotel and took him to the Science Museum and Friendship Park unexpectedly.

Cultural Heritage and Warm Welcome

Modi expressed gratitude for glimpses of Ethiopian history at the National Palace Museum in Addis Ababa. "It was a powerful reminder of Ethiopia’s rich traditions," he posted on X. The Nobel Peace Prize-winning Ethiopian PM’s gestures showed remarkable respect for Modi.

"Thank you Ethiopia for a welcome that was unforgettable," Modi said. The Indian community showed warmth and affection upon his arrival at the hotel. Local artists performed dances themed on popular Hindi songs to welcome him.

On Wednesday, Modi will address the Joint Session of Parliament to share insights on India's journey as the Mother of Democracy and its partnership with Ethiopia benefiting the Global South. Before arriving in Ethiopia from Jordan, Modi met King Abdullah II at Husseiniya Palace on Monday.

India and Jordan signed MoUs in culture, renewable energy, water management, digital infrastructure, and twinning Petra with Ellora to boost bilateral ties. From Ethiopia, Modi will proceed to Oman on his three-nation tour's final leg.
