India takes a significant step in boosting agri exports by successfully sending its first commercial trial shipment of pomegranates to the United States via sea. This milestone marks a new chapter in Indias trade relations and showcases the potential of the countrys vibrant agricultural sector.
In a significant milestone for India's agricultural exports, the country has flagged off its first commercial trial shipment of pomegranates to the United States via sea. This shipment marks a major step forward in expanding India's pomegranate export market and diversifying its export routes.

Shipment Details and Source
The inaugural shipment, comprising 4,200 boxes weighing 12.6 tonnes, was dispatched by INI Farms from the Integrated Food Court (IFC) facility at MSAMB, Vashi, Navi Mumbai on February 28. INI Farms has established a robust value chain for pomegranates by directly collaborating with farmers in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
The pomegranates for this shipment were sourced from Anarnet registered farmers in Sangola, Maharashtra. Notably, the farmers received a premium of 20% compared to other export markets and an impressive 35% premium compared to the domestic market.
India's Pomegranate Production and Export
India holds a prominent position as one of the largest producers of pomegranates globally. In recent years, the country's pomegranate production has witnessed a substantial growth rate of 20-25%. The major pomegranate-producing states in India include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh, with Maharashtra contributing over 50% of the total production.
In 2022-23, APEDA facilitated pomegranate exports worth USD 58.36 million to various countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bahrain, and Oman.
APEDA's Role and Future Prospects
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has played a pivotal role in promoting and facilitating pomegranate exports from India. APEDA has been actively addressing supply chain bottlenecks and establishing Export Promotion Forums (EPF) specifically for pomegranates.
The successful sea consignment of pomegranates to the US is a testament to APEDA's efforts in ensuring quality assurance and building trust between Indian exporters and foreign importers. This initiative is expected to pave the way for increased pomegranate exports to the US and other international markets, further boosting India's agricultural exports and benefiting farmers across the country.
