A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the tourism authorities of India and Iran is being planned to enhance cooperation in the sector, according to Aliasghar Shalbafian, Deputy of Tourism in Iran's Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts. Speaking at the Iran Tourism Roadshow, Shalbafian highlighted the historical similarities between the two nations.

Shalbafian mentioned that last year, Iran unilaterally waived visas for Indian tourists. This led to a 39% increase in Indian visitors in the first four months of this year, surpassing 58,000 tourists from India last year. He noted that India has much to offer Iranian tourists as well.
Boosting Bilateral Tourism
During discussions with Indian tourism officials, both sides agreed to promote bilateral tourism. They aim to facilitate travel requirements for Iranians visiting India and vice versa. Shalbafian indicated that a MoU could be signed soon, focusing on tourism promotion and sharing cultural heritage experiences.
The draft of this MoU has already been prepared, with signing expected within six months. The agreement will cover tourism promotion, product development, and focus on intangible cultural heritage shared by both countries. Shalbafian emphasised the commitment to fulfilling the MoU's requirements once agreed upon.
Direct Flights and Roadshows
Both countries are also considering establishing direct flights between various cities beyond their capitals. Currently, there are two weekly flights from Tehran to Delhi and one from Tehran to Mumbai, operated by Iranian carriers Mahan Air and Iran Air. There is demand for more flights to cities like Shiraz and Isfahan.
Iran has hosted roadshows in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and New Delhi to showcase its diverse tourism potential. Plans are underway to extend these roadshows to other Indian cities. Shalbafian also welcomed similar roadshows in different Iranian cities.
Visa Waivers and Safety Concerns
Iran has waived visas for over 40 countries, allowing more than half of the world's population to travel there without needing a visa. Many can also receive visas upon arrival at the airport. Shalbafian addressed concerns about safety in Iran, stating that political issues do affect tourism but assured that Iran is safe for visitors.
He pointed out that media often exaggerates safety issues in Iran. "If any tourist in Iran, for example from India, had a tiny issue, it will be widely reflected in the media," he said. Shalbafian reassured that Iran welcomes tourists with hospitality.
Tourism as a Connector
Shalbafian believes tourism can strengthen people-to-people relations between India and Iran. He noted that last year, over 13 million Iranians travelled abroad for various purposes. India could benefit from this market by attracting more Iranian tourists.
In November, the Iranian city of Yazd will host a key meeting of tourism ministers. This event aims to further bolster tourism ties between the two countries. Shalbafian concluded by sending a message in Persian to Indians: "We eagerly await for India's tourists to be served in Iran."
The collaboration between India and Iran in tourism is set to deepen with these initiatives. Both nations are working towards making travel easier and more appealing for their citizens through mutual efforts and agreements.
