New Delhi, Mar 20 - The Indian government has taken a significant step towards combating misinformation online by officially establishing a fact-check unit within the Press Information Bureau (PIB). This move, announced on Wednesday, aims to scrutinize online content related to government affairs for accuracy. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has played a pivotal role in this development, notifying the unit under the IT Rules of 2021.

The newly formed Fact Check Unit is designated as the central government's official body for verifying information concerning its operations. This decision underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the authenticity of information circulating online. The notification follows closely on the heels of the Bombay High Court's decision not to prevent the establishment of this unit, a verdict that came after a petition filed by comedian Kunal Kamra and the Editors Guild of India. The petitioners have since escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, with a hearing anticipated on Thursday.
In April of the previous year, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology introduced amendments to the Information Technology Rules, 2021, through the 2023 Rules. These amendments empower the Fact Check Unit to identify and report any misleading or false content related to government business to social media intermediaries. In turn, these platforms are required to remove such content to maintain their legal immunity against third-party information.
The establishment of this unit marks a critical step in the government's efforts to maintain the integrity of information online. By actively monitoring and addressing misinformation, the Fact Check Unit aims to foster a more informed and truthful digital environment.
