As companies in India push workers to return to the office, a recent report has revealed that 44 percent of Indian employees are engaged in a fully flexible work model, significantly outpacing other countries in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This stands in stark contrast to the 16 percent in China, 20 percent in Australia, and 24 percent in Singapore, according to the report titled "People at Work 2023" by payroll software and HR services provider ADP.

Increased Productivity and Acceptance of Remote Work
Notably, the report found that 74 percent of Indian employees surveyed reported increased productivity, crediting the success to remote work. This explains the widespread acceptance of flexible work models in Indian offices. Amid the ongoing global debate on workers returning to the workplace, India stands out as a leader in offering the highest workplace flexibility in the APAC region, showcasing the commitment of Indian companies to creating progressive work environments.
Women Leading the Charge for Workplace Flexibility
Rahul Goyal, Managing Director of ADP India and Southeast Asia, highlighted that a significant number of women are leading the charge in seeking workplace flexibility. He emphasized the importance for organizations to recognize the diverse needs of workers and adopt viable workplace strategies that cater to everyone, rather than implementing a one-size-fits-all approach. This will ensure that Indian organizations not only adapt to the changing landscape but also set the pace for a future where the workplace is as dynamic as the workforce itself.
Survey Findings on Work Arrangements
The report is based on responses from over 32,000 workers across 17 countries, including 7,721 in the Asia Pacific region (Australia, China, India, and Singapore). The findings revealed that only 14 percent of Indians reported working from the office every day, while 41 percent follow a hybrid model with a certain number of days in the office each week and the rest working from home. Furthermore, around 85 percent of all survey respondents in India still enjoy working from home in some capacity.
Flexibility of Location and Productivity
Regarding flexibility of location, 43 percent of respondents reported organizational approval for working from anywhere in the world, and 42 percent have the flexibility to work from anywhere within India. Over 74 percent of respondents also reported a productivity increase, attributing it to the remote work model.
Empowerment of Women through Flexible Work Arrangements
The report also found that 76 percent of women respondents, including 78 percent who are working mothers, feel empowered by flexible working arrangements. This serves as a powerful tool in retaining women in the workforce, enabling them to effectively balance their professional and personal lives. In fact, the report revealed that 27 percent of respondents prioritize flexibility of work hours in their jobs, with 31 percent of those being women and 25 percent being men, indicating a clear preference for flexible working hours among working women.
