India emphasizes the importance of coal and lignite gasification projects in its energy transition. The government intends to promote these projects with private and public sector involvement, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
In a significant move towards India's energy transition, Union Coal Secretary Amrit Lal Meena emphasized the importance of coal and lignite gasification projects. Addressing an industry interaction meeting organized by the Ministry of Coal in Hyderabad, Meena highlighted the government's intention to take up these projects on very high priority.

Promoting Coal and Lignite Gasification
The Central government has recently approved schemes for the promotion of coal and lignite gasification. These schemes envision the participation of the private sector and public sector undertakings in setting up new projects for coal and lignite gasification. In January, the government allocated an outlay of Rs 8,500 crore as financial assistance to promote such projects.
Private Sector Participation
Meena expressed the government's expectations for the private sector to venture into setting up coal gasification projects. He announced that the Ministry will release a draft request for proposal (RFP) and share it with the industry for feedback before finalizing it. The coal secretary emphasized the government's commitment to taking up these projects on very high priority.
Coal's Role in Energy Security
Meena explained the crucial role of coal in India's energy security. He highlighted the government's efforts to attract private players, which have resulted in increased domestic coal production and a significant decrease in coal imports. The coal secretary also mentioned initiatives such as making land more easily available, financing, and providing incentives to promote cleaner coal technologies and enhance energy security.
Industry Engagement and Collaboration
The industry interaction meeting brought together industry experts and stakeholders to showcase the government's commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in the coal sector. Through strategic initiatives and policy frameworks, the Ministry of Coal aims to catalyze investments and technological advancements in coal/gasification projects, aligning with India's vision for a cleaner and energy-efficient future.
Stakeholder Feedback and RFP Process
The stakeholders present at the meeting submitted their views on the scheme, which were acknowledged by the Ministry of Coal. The ministry will soon put the RFP for the scheme in the public forum for stakeholders' comments and feedback. The coal secretary urged all industry stakeholders to participate in the RFP process and share their valuable inputs to ensure transparency and openness.
CIL's Role in Gasification
Coal India Limited (CIL) Chairman P M Prasad elaborated on CIL's proactive initiatives and endeavors in the realm of gasification. He emphasized CIL's commitment to innovation and sustainability, underscoring the company's role as a key player in driving the transition towards cleaner energy solutions. Prasad highlighted the opportunities in coal gasification and called on interested players with the technological capacity to partner with CIL to build a cleaner future and achieve the net-zero target by 2070.
India's focus on coal and lignite gasification projects reflects the country's commitment to a sustainable energy transition. By promoting private sector participation, providing financial assistance, and fostering innovation, the government aims to enhance energy security, reduce coal imports, and move towards cleaner coal technologies. The collaborative efforts of the government, industry, and stakeholders will be crucial in achieving India's long-term energy goals and contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
