The India-US Innovation Handshake marks a significant milestone in strengthening innovation ecosystems between the two nations. This collaboration aims to bolster deep tech sectors, promote cooperation in Critical and Emerging Technologies, and unlock commercial opportunities in the high tech industry. Through a series of events, round tables, hackathons, and information sharing, the partnership seeks to drive innovation, support startups, and address global economic challenges.

In a significant move to bolster innovation and entrepreneurship, the Union Cabinet of India approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and India aimed at enhancing innovation ecosystems. This collaboration marks a concerted effort by both countries to strengthen the startup ecosystem in deep tech sectors and foster cooperation in the initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).
Promoting Commercial Opportunities in High-Tech Sector
The MoU is expected to make substantial contributions to reinforcing commercial opportunities within the high-tech sector. By fostering an environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship, the partnership aims to unlock the potential of deep tech startups and drive economic growth in both countries.
Innovation Handshake Events and Collaborative Activities
The scope of cooperation under the MoU encompasses a series of India-US Innovation Handshake events, roundtable discussions with the private sector, hackathons, Open Innovation programs, information sharing, and other collaborative activities. These initiatives will provide platforms for startups, industry experts, and policymakers to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and explore potential partnerships.
Upcoming Innovation Handshake Events
The MoU paves the way for two upcoming Innovation Handshake events scheduled to take place in India and the US in early 2024. These events will feature an investment forum designed to assist US and Indian startups in bringing their innovative concepts and products to market. Additionally, a hackathon in Silicon Valley will offer startups an opportunity to pitch their ideas and technologies to address global economic challenges.
India-Italy MoU on Industrial Property Rights
In a separate development, the Cabinet also approved another MoU between India and Italy focused on cooperation in the field of Industrial Property Rights (IPRs). This MoU aims to establish a mechanism that facilitates collaborative activities in the realm of IP and information technology services related to this domain.
Supporting Enterprises and Streamlining IPR Processes
The India-Italy MoU seeks to support enterprises, particularly startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in accessing and participating in national and international IPR systems. Furthermore, it endeavors to streamline procedures associated with processing IPR applications, enhance IP awareness, promote IPR commercialization, and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.
The approval of these MoUs underscores India's commitment to fostering innovation, nurturing startups, and enhancing collaboration with global partners. By joining forces with the United States and Italy, India is poised to accelerate its progress in deep tech sectors, drive economic growth, and position itself as a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship.
