The IndiaAI Mission, with an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore, aims to encourage AI development in India. Over 10,000 GPUs will be made available to stakeholders to create an AI ecosystem.
The Indian government has announced that the graphics processing units (GPUs) approved under the IndiaAI Mission will be made available to various stakeholders within the next 18-24 months. This initiative aims to encourage the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country by providing access to advanced computing infrastructure.

Key Points of the IndiaAI Mission
The IndiaAI Mission, approved by the Cabinet with an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore for five years, includes several key components:
- Supercomputing Capacity: The mission will establish supercomputing capacity comprising over 10,000 GPUs, which will be made available to stakeholders for creating an AI ecosystem.
- Public-Private Partnership: To ensure rapid deployment of the AI supercomputing infrastructure, the government will collaborate with private entities through a transparent bidding process. Private entities will be selected based on viability gap funding to establish the compute facility, which will be made available to innovators, startups, and researchers at reasonable rates.
- Support for Startups: The mission will provide financial support to startups to access computing resources for AI development. However, direct startup funding will not be available under this mission, as there are other programs for that purpose.
- India-Specific Foundation Models: The mission recognizes the need for India-specific foundation models, as many globally created models are based on Western data and may carry inherent biases. The mission aims to develop foundation models tailored to the Indian environment.
Addressing Infrastructure Shortage and Bias in AI
The IndiaAI Mission addresses two critical challenges in AI development in India. Firstly, it aims to address the shortage of computing infrastructure for AI, which has resulted in Indian firms paying almost double the cost for accessing GPUs or high-performance computers on cloud compared to countries like the US and China.
Secondly, the mission emphasizes the importance of developing India-specific foundation models to avoid biases and prejudices inherent in Western-based models. This is particularly relevant in light of recent controversies surrounding AI tools, such as Google's Gemini, which received criticism for its objectionable response and bias towards PM Narendra Modi.
The IndiaAI Mission represents a significant step towards advancing AI development in India. By providing access to advanced GPUs, supporting startups, and addressing infrastructure challenges, the mission aims to create a conducive environment for innovation and research in the field of AI. The development of India-specific foundation models will further ensure that AI applications are tailored to the unique needs and context of the country.
