Indias aviation industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, with the rapid expansion of existing airports and the development of new ones. This surge in infrastructure development is transforming the country into a global aviation hub, catering to the ever-increasing demand for domestic and international air travel.
In her presentation of the interim Budget for 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the significant progress made in India's aviation sector over the past decade. She emphasized the government's continued commitment to expanding existing airports and developing new ones to meet the growing demand for air travel.

Rapid Expansion of Airports
Sitharaman noted that the number of airports in India has doubled in the last 10 years, increasing from 74 to 149. This expansion has been driven by the rapid growth of the civil aviation market in India, which is one of the fastest-growing in the world. To cater to the increasing passenger traffic, Indian carriers have proactively placed orders for over 1,000 new aircraft.
UDAN Scheme: Boosting Regional Air Connectivity
The government's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme has played a crucial role in enhancing regional air connectivity. Under this scheme, 517 new routes have been introduced, connecting tier-two and tier-three cities with major airports. This has made air travel more accessible and affordable for citizens across the country, with over 1.3 crore passengers benefiting from these new routes.
Major Aircraft Orders by Domestic Carriers
In a significant development, three domestic carriers – Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air – have collectively placed orders for a total of 1,120 new aircraft in less than a year. This includes Akasa Air's recent order for 150 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, as well as Air India and IndiGo's combined orders for 970 planes from Boeing and Airbus in 2023.
Air India's Transformation and IndiGo's Expansion
Tata Group-owned Air India has undergone a major transformation, placing an order for 470 aircraft – 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing – in February 2022. IndiGo, India's largest airline, followed suit in June 2022 by ordering 500 narrow-body planes from Airbus.
Civil Aviation Minister's Perspective
Commenting on the budget, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed his enthusiasm, describing it as an aspirational and ambitious budget for India. He highlighted the continued priority given to capital expenditure, the expansion of targeted social schemes, and programs aimed at achieving India's net zero targets. Scindia emphasized that this well-rounded budget will fuel India's roadmap towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The Indian aviation sector has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation over the past decade, driven by the government's focus on infrastructure development, regional connectivity, and the proactive approach of domestic carriers. With the continued expansion of airports and the addition of new aircraft, the future of air travel in India looks promising, providing greater accessibility, affordability, and convenience for passengers across the country.
