Two Indian Coal Mines Among World's Top Producers

Gevra and Kusmunda blocks of South Eastern Coalfields have been ranked second and fourth, respectively, among the world's 10 largest coal mines by production volume, according to WorldAtlas.com. These mines, located in Chhattisgarh's Korba district, produce over 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal annually, contributing about 10% of India's total coal output, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) stated on Thursday.

Gevra mine boasts an annual production capacity of 70 MT and produced 59 MT of coal in FY24. Kusmunda mine, on the other hand, produced over 50 MT of coal. Both mines are open-cast projects managed by the state-owned firm. SECL Chairman and Managing Director Prem Sagar Mishra expressed pride in this achievement, stating, "It is a proud moment that two of the world's five largest coal mines are in Chhattisgarh."

The list also features Black Thunder Mine and North Antelope Rochelle Mine in the US, which secured the first and third spots with estimated productions of 62.68 MT and 56.25 MT of coal in 2023, respectively. Northern Shaanxi Mine in China ranked fifth with a coal production of 41.34 MT last year.

SECL, based in Bilaspur, operates 59 blocks and is one of the top three coal-producing subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal. In FY24, CIL's total output was 773 MT, with SECL contributing 187 MT to this figure.
