Indian LPG Carriers Shivalik & Nanda Devi Cross Strait of Hormuz; How Much Cooking Gas Is Headed to India?

Two Indian-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, Shivalik and Nanda Devi have successfully transited the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz after receiving clearance from Iranian authorities. Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints. Any disruption there can directly impact India, which relies heavily on imports for its fuel requirements.

The two vessels were among 24 Indian-flagged ships operating in the Persian Gulf, located west of the Strait of Hormuz. With their transit, the number of Indian vessels remaining in the Gulf has now reduced to 22, carrying a total of 611 seafarers, according to Shipping Ministry Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha during a press briefing.

"Two India-flagged LPG carriers, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, successfully crossed the strait carrying about 92,712 metric tons of LPG to India, alleviating supply concerns," said Siddhartha Khemka - Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.

Both Shivalik and Nanda Devi, two specialised Indian LPG carriers crossed the narrow chokepoint late at night/early morning and are now sailing towards Indian ports.

The LPG tanker Shivalik is approaching India, and officials said it is expected to arrive at Mundra Port in Gujarat around 5 pm today (Monday). The second LPG carrier, Nanda Devi, is expected to reach India on March 17.

Together, the two ships are transporting a massive consignment of LPG vital for domestic consumption.

Shivalik's Cargo Loading Capacity:

The Shivalik tanker alone is carrying around 55,000 tonnes of LPG, which is estimated to be nearly equivalent to one day of India's total LPG imports, according to The Hindu reports.

Nanda Devi's Cargo Loading Capacity:

The Nanda Devi is transporting more than 46,000 metric tonnes of LPG as per CNN-News18 report. , a shipment considered critical for maintaining supply stability amid disruptions to shipping movements in the region.

Who Owns the Shivalik LPG Carrier? Know All About It

Shivalik is classified as a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC), a specialised vessel designed to transport liquefied petroleum gas across long distances.

The ship is owned by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). The company inducted Shivalik, along with another LPG vessel Sahyadri, into its fleet during August-September 2025. Sahyadri is currently positioned off India's west coast, away from the conflict-affected corridor.

The tanker was built in South Korea in 2008 and was initially owned by Qatar Shipping Co.

Features of Shivalik Carrier

It measures approximately 225 metres in length and has a beam, or width, of around 36 metres, making it one of the larger vessels in its category. The tanker is equipped with segregated cargo tanks and temperature-controlled systems that keep LPG in liquid form while meeting stringent international safety standards.
