Indian tourists are among the highest spenders in Hong Kong, with an average expenditure of HKD 9,139 (₹1 lakh) per person, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board. The average stay for Indian visitors has also increased from three days in 2018 to 4.5 days in 2024. This trend highlights the growing importance of Indian travellers to Hong Kong's tourism sector.

Hong Kong is aiming to double its number of Indian visitors this year by hosting various festivals and events. In 2023, around 2.8 lakh Indian tourists visited Hong Kong, and the goal is to significantly increase this figure by the end of 2024. Puneet Kumar, Director for South Asia and the Middle East at the Hong Kong Tourism Board, stated, "Our goal is to double this figure [2.8 lakh visitors] this year. We have an array of festivals and events planned to enhance tourism."
Hong Kong's Strategic Focus on Indian Tourists
The tourism board is focusing on both leisure and meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) segments. For leisure travellers, Hong Kong is promoting cruise holidays for families. Additionally, India remains a crucial market for incentive group travel to Hong Kong.
In 2018, approximately 400,000 Indians visited Hong Kong out of a total of 33 million international travellers. By 2023, the city saw an increase to 34 million international visitors. So far in 2024, about 21 million travellers have already visited Hong Kong.
The tourism board aims to surpass pre-Covid arrival figures from 2018. Kumar noted that "The year 2018 is used as a benchmark since 2019 saw a significant decline in tourism due to widespread protests in Hong Kong over a proposed amendment to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance."
Ease of Travel and Connectivity
Kumar highlighted that Hong Kong is well-connected to major Indian cities and offers visa-free entry for Indian travellers who only need to complete a pre-arrival registration online. This process takes about ten minutes and simplifies travel arrangements significantly.
The board is positioning Hong Kong as a year-round destination with major events and festivals planned throughout the year. This strategy aims to attract more frequent visits from Gen Z and Millennials who are particularly interested in concerts and festivals.
Indian Travellers' Spending Habits
Indian tourists are known for their high spending habits in Hong Kong. With an average expenditure of HKD 9,139 (₹1 lakh) per person, they contribute significantly to the local economy. This spending pattern underscores their importance as valuable customers for various sectors within Hong Kong.
The tourism board's efforts are part of a broader trend where countries like Singapore, Dubai, Oman, Thailand, and Tajikistan are also targeting Indian travellers to boost their tourism industries.
"By the end of the first half of 2024, Hong Kong welcomed 181,000 visitors from India," Kumar said. This number represents about 89% of pre-Covid levels and indicates a strong recovery trend.
The focus on attracting more Indian tourists aligns with global trends where several countries are actively courting Indian travellers due to their high spending power and increasing travel frequency.
The board's initiatives aim not only at increasing visitor numbers but also at enhancing their overall experience through diverse events and seamless travel processes.
This strategic approach aims at making Hong Kong a preferred destination for both leisure and business travel among Indians.
