Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently inaugurated the Tata Aircraft Complex in Vadodara. This facility is India's first private venture focused on manufacturing military aircraft, specifically the Airbus C295. Modi emphasised the growing partnership between India and Spain, describing this project as a crucial part of the "Make in India, Make for the World" initiative.

The Airbus C295, initially developed by CASA, a Spanish aerospace company under Airbus Defence and Space, serves multiple roles such as medical evacuations and maritime patrols. Under the C295 programme, 56 aircraft will be delivered. Sixteen will come directly from Spain, while Tata Advanced Systems Ltd will manufacture the remaining 40 in India.
Strengthening Defence Manufacturing
During the event, Modi and Sanchez explored an exhibition showcasing the new facility. Modi highlighted it as a symbol of India's evolving work culture. He noted that the foundation stone was laid in October 2022, demonstrating India's swift transition from concept to execution. The Prime Minister stressed the government's dedication to removing delays in project planning and execution.
Modi expressed optimism that the Tata Aircraft Complex would mirror the success of the Bombardier train coach manufacturing facility in Vadodara. He recalled his experience with its establishment during his tenure as Gujarat's Chief Minister. He believes this new facility will also boost exports.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The Tata-Airbus factory is expected to create thousands of jobs and enhance skill development. It will support local manufacturing of 18,000 aircraft parts, providing significant opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide. India has become a major supplier of aircraft components globally, and this facility is poised to drive further innovation and industry growth.
Modi highlighted India's aviation sector's impressive growth over the past decade. The government is working to improve air connectivity to smaller cities while aiming to make India a hub for aviation and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services. Indian airlines have ordered 1,200 new aircraft, with this factory playing a crucial role in producing civil planes for both domestic and international markets.
Honouring Contributions
Modi paid tribute to Father Carlos Valles, a Spanish-Indian Jesuit priest who lived in India for over 50 years. Father Valles made significant contributions to education and culture, authoring numerous books on mathematics in Gujarati. The Indian government recognised his impactful work by awarding him the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour.
Quoting Spanish poet Antonio Machado, Modi remarked, "As we start treading towards the goal, the path towards the goal is created automatically." He highlighted India's proactive approach in defence manufacturing. Over the past decade, India's defence sector has undergone significant transformation due to decisive actions taken ten years ago.
Modi reiterated that without these actions, achieving such milestones would have been unimaginable. A decade ago, defence manufacturing was synonymous with imports. However, under Modi's leadership, India embarked on a new path prioritising domestic production over imports.
The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to Airbus and Tata teams while honouring late industrialist Ratan Tata for his contributions. This collaboration marks a significant step forward for India's defence manufacturing identity.
