India is set to advance in quantum computing with a new reference facility in Bangalore. This project, led by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), aims to be operational within three years. Quantum computing uses quantum mechanics to tackle problems beyond the reach of traditional computers.

The initiative involves three main stages: importing necessary components, assembling them, and developing software and applications. Jitesh Choudhary, head of C-DAC North East, mentioned that the entire process is expected to take about three years. The facility will help measure and benchmark India's progress in quantum computing.
Quantum Research and Innovation
The Indian government has allocated approximately Rs 70-80 crore for this project. Several C-DAC centres nationwide are contributing expertise in areas like operating systems, middleware, security, and algorithms. This collaborative effort aims to position India at the forefront of global quantum technology advancements.
A S Murty, a senior scientist at C-DAC, shared insights during the International Symposium on Quantum Computing ISQCI 2024 in Kolkata. "The research on quantum computing has been ongoing for several years by various institutions, including us. The Quantum Reference Facility is coming up at the C-DAC facility in Bangalore," he stated.
Integrating High-Performance Computing
C-DAC is also working on integrating high-performance computing with quantum computing. "We have already developed high-performance computers, and now we will work on bridging them with quantum computing," Murty added. This integration aims to enhance computational capabilities significantly.
In addition to quantum computing efforts, C-DAC is providing AI-based imagery sensing solutions to the Indian Railways. These solutions help identify criminals operating primarily on trains, showcasing C-DAC's diverse technological contributions.
India's National Quantum Mission (NQM) has selected leading institutions to establish Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) for quantum research and innovation. This initiative further strengthens India's commitment to advancing in the field of quantum technology.
The establishment of this reference facility marks a significant step in India's journey towards becoming a leader in quantum computing. With dedicated efforts from various institutions and government support, India aims to make substantial progress in this cutting-edge field.
