IndiGo, India's premier airline, has taken a significant step towards expanding its operational capabilities by placing a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft from Airbus, with an option to acquire up to 70 more. This move not only marks the airline's entry into the wide-body aircraft segment but also underscores its commitment to doubling its size by 2030. The announcement comes at a time when IndiGo is broadening its international reach, currently operating over 350 narrow-body aircraft and utilizing two wide-body Boeing 777 planes leased from Turkish Airlines for routes to Istanbul from Delhi and Mumbai.

The A350-900 aircraft, renowned for their efficiency and performance, will be equipped with Rolls Royce's Trent XWB engines. Although the specific configurations of these planes are yet to be determined, deliveries are anticipated to commence in 2027. This strategic decision aligns with IndiGo's vision to enhance its service offerings and cater to the burgeoning demand for air travel, both domestically and internationally.
IndiGo's CEO, Pieter Elbers, described this development as a "historic moment" for the airline. With a dominant market share exceeding 60% in India's domestic sector, IndiGo is poised to leverage this expansion to solidify its position as a key player in global aviation. The airline's ambitious order also reflects the broader objective of positioning India as a pivotal aviation hub on the international stage.
In June of the previous year, IndiGo made headlines by placing an unprecedented order for 500 aircraft with Airbus, signifying the largest single aircraft order in aviation history. The airline's current order book includes nearly 1,000 A320 family aircraft awaiting delivery over the next decade, comprising a mix of A320neo, A321neo, and A321 XLR models.
The introduction of A350 planes is set to enable IndiGo to establish direct connections from various Indian metros to global destinations. This expansion is not only a testament to IndiGo's growth trajectory but also enhances Airbus's presence in the wide-body segment, traditionally dominated by Boeing. The partnership between IndiGo and Airbus reaches new heights with this order, marking the commencement of a promising relationship with Rolls Royce as well.
IndiGo's strategic move comes amid efforts to elevate India's status in the global aviation landscape. The Indian government has articulated its vision for India to emerge as a leading aviation power by 2030 through substantial infrastructure development and strategic initiatives aimed at transforming the country into a global aviation hub.
Reflecting on the future prospects of air travel in India, Ewen McDonald, Chief Customer Officer of Rolls-Royce plc, highlighted India as an important market with anticipated significant growth and infrastructural advancements. This sentiment resonates with IndiGo's objectives of aligning its expansion with India's economic growth potential and establishing itself as a formidable entity in international aviation.
As IndiGo embarks on this new chapter, it sets the stage for direct competition with Air India on long and ultra-long-haul routes. Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales for Commercial Aircraft, expressed enthusiasm about supporting IndiGo in this strategic endeavor, emphasizing the pioneering step towards connecting India with the world.
This landmark decision by IndiGo not only signifies its ascent as a global aviation contender but also mirrors the broader aspirations of India's aviation sector poised for exponential growth in alignment with the nation's economic trajectory.
