Air travel in India is now going to be more expensive as IndiGo has announced the introduction of a fuel surcharge on flight tickets, following a similar announcement by Air India earlier this week. The surcharge on flight tickets will come into effect from 12:01 AM on March 14, as airlines are also struggling with rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices because of the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Indigo In its statement said "This measure is taken due to the significant surge in fuel prices following the ongoing geopolitical issues in the Middle East. IATA's Jet Fuel Monitor indicates an 85+% increase in fuel prices for the region. Aviation Turbine Fuel represents a significant share of airlines' operating cost. This sudden and steep increase will have a material impact on all airlines' costs and network, including IndiGo's."
Because of the fuel surcharge, the ticket prices across several routes will now be costlier adding between Rs. 425 and Rs. 2,300 per sector, depending on the destination. With ATF accounting for nearly 40% of an airline's operating costs, carriers are increasingly passing on the fuel burden to passengers.
IndiGo fuel surcharge details
According to the press release by the airline, the IndiGo fuel surcharge will vary depending on route categories. The additional charges are structured as follows:
Route Category Fuel Surcharge
Domestic & Indian Subcontinent Rs. 425
Middle East routes Rs. 900
Southeast Asia, China, Africa Rs. 1,800
Europe routes Rs. 2,300
This means that passengers booking flights on IndiGo domestic routes will see a minimum increase of Rs. 425 per ticket, while those travelling on long-haul international routes could pay up to Rs. 2,300 extra.
Air India already imposed similar surcharge
Earlier this week, Air India also introduced a fuel surcharge on flight tickets, beginning March 12, 2026. The airline imposed an additional Rs. 399 surcharge on domestic and SAARC routes, with higher charges applied gradually for longer international routes.
So far, airlines such as Akasa Air and SpiceJet have not announced any fuel surcharge.
Why aviation fuel prices are rising?
The increase in aviation turbine fuel prices in India is linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have pushed global crude oil prices higher. The region plays a critical role in global energy supply, and ongoing instability has caused sharp fluctuations in oil markets.
Since ATF is derived from crude oil, rising oil prices directly impact airline operating costs. Airlines typically respond to such spikes either by increasing ticket fares or introducing temporary fuel surcharges.
Impact on Passengers
The introduction of fuel surcharges by major airlines like IndiGo and Air India is expected to push domestic and international airfare prices higher in the coming weeks.
Passengers planning travel may see higher ticket prices, particularly on international flights to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe, where the surcharge is significantly higher.
With global oil markets currently very volatile, airline fares in India could continue to fluctuate depending on fuel costs, geopolitical developments, and demand for air travel.
