IndiGo has announced an agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways to damp lease two additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This move aims to enhance IndiGo's wide-body fleet. The airline is expanding its international reach, with plans to introduce direct flights to Europe. The new aircraft are expected to commence operations by early 2026, focusing on long-haul routes from India.

IndiGo's Strategic Expansion
IndiGo's partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways began with a Letter of Intent for six aircraft last November. By February, IndiGo confirmed the damp lease of four Boeing 787-9 planes from Norse Atlantic. The latest agreement adds two more aircraft, bringing the total to six under this collaboration. One of these planes is already operational on the Delhi-Bangkok route since March 1.
The damp lease arrangement involves the lessor providing maintenance and the aircraft itself, but not the crew or insurance. Initially set for six months, this lease can be extended up to 18 months, pending regulatory approvals. This strategic move aligns with IndiGo's commitment to international growth and offering more options for long-haul travel.
Growth in Air Passenger Traffic
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, stated, "We have deepened our partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways by signing our third agreement for the addition of two more Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This move reinforces our commitment to international growth and our customers, promising to introduce more options on long-haul routes."
A report by CareEdge predicts a 9% CAGR in air passenger traffic between FY2025 and FY2027, potentially reaching 485 million passengers by FY27. International traffic is expected to grow faster due to more wide-body aircraft being introduced from FY26. Meanwhile, domestic traffic will likely continue its steady rise from a high base.
IndiGo's expansion into long-haul markets reflects the increasing demand for international travel from India. As passenger volumes rise, IndiGo aims to provide more direct flight options and enhance its service offerings on international routes.
