Diwali 2024 sees a 17% rise in accommodation searches, with New Delhi and Goa attracting international tourists. This growing trend highlights India's cultural significance during the festival.
The celebration of Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, marks a significant time in India, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. This festival attracts visitors from both within India and around the globe, eager to immerse themselves in the cultural and religious festivities. According to a recent report by digital travel platform Agoda, there has been a noticeable uptick in interest for the Diwali period, with a 17% increase in accommodation searches compared to the previous year, showcasing the growing appeal of experiencing the vibrant celebrations in India.

Agoda's findings highlight that the United States stands as the primary source of international visitors coming to India for Diwali in 2024. Among the cities, New Delhi has captured the most attention from overseas guests, followed by the coastal state of Goa and the bustling city of Mumbai. This surge in interest is not limited to international tourists; domestic travelers are also actively seeking destinations to spend the festival, with Goa topping the list of preferred locations according to search data.
The increase in travel interest extends to a 23% rise in searches for accommodations within India, indicating a strong desire among locals to explore their country during the festival. Goa, Udaipur, Mumbai, Pondicherry, and Jaipur emerge as the most sought-after destinations for Diwali celebrations. These cities offer a plethora of experiences, from Goa's beachside festivities to the royal ambiance of Udaipur, catering to the diverse preferences of travelers looking to celebrate Diwali in distinctive ways across India.
The top international markets showing keen interest in India's Diwali celebrations include the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. The allure of New Delhi, Goa, Mumbai, Chennai, and Jaipur as prime destinations underscores the global fascination with India's rich cultural tapestry, especially during Diwali. These cities are renowned for their dynamic celebrations, providing visitors with an opportunity to delve into the essence of Indian heritage.
Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director for the India Subcontinent and MEA at Agoda, expressed his views on the global attention towards Diwali in India, stating, "Diwali is a time when the world increasingly turns its eyes to India. It's no surprise that New Delhi and Goa are leading in attracting both international and domestic travellers, as both destinations offer unique cultural experiences during this festive season."
This growing trend of travel during Diwali not only enriches the cultural exchange but also significantly contributes to the tourism sector in India. As destinations prepare to welcome visitors with open arms, the festival of Diwali continues to illuminate the world's interest in India's storied traditions and festivities.
