IPL 2026: The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) is set to begin on March 28. While key details such as the schedule, prize money and match fixtures have already been announced, speculation continues to grow around the leadership of the Mumbai Indians. Following India's T20 World Cup triumph, reports suggest that Suryakumar Yadav could emerge as a potential captaincy candidate, replacing Hardik Pandya.
While the official announcement of IPL 2026 was made on Sunday, the fixtures of the IPL 2026 edition are yet to be finalised.

Mumbai Indians Suryakumar Yadav To Replace Hardik Pandya As Captain?
Several media reports have suggested that Suryakumar Yadav, who recently led India in T20Is, may take over the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians. As of now there is no official information about Suryakumar Yadav's potential captaincy of Mumbai Indians. Notably, Hardik Pandya was appointed as MI captain ahead of the 2024 season. He had replaced Rohit Sharma in the role.
Suryakumar Yadav's Success in T20 World Cup
Suryakumar took charge of the Indian T20I side in July and quickly built an impressive record. India stayed unbeaten in bilateral T20I series and lifted major multi-nation trophies, including the Asia Cup 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026. Across 52 games, Suryakumar oversaw 40 wins, eight losses and a 76.92 win percentage.
Hardik Pandya To Remain Mumbai Indians Captain
As of now, there has been no official confirmation about Suryakumar Yadav becoming Mumbai Indians' captain. Hence, Hardik Pandya is likely to remain the captain of the team. Hence, the franchise is instead expected to hand Hardik another season to prove leadership credentials in the Indian Premier League.
Hardik became Mumbai Indians captain before the 2024 season, replacing Rohit Sharma, but results have been modest. The five-time champions finished as the poorest side in IPL 2024. In the following season, Mumbai reached the playoffs but exited after losing Qualifier 2 to Punjab Kings. Their last title came in 2020, increasing pressure for success.
Mumbai Indians IPL 2026 Future Leadership
Suryakumar and Hardik were central to India's T20 World Cup 2026 triumph. Suryakumar handled tactical calls and on-field match-ups, while Hardik contributed with both bat and ball in crucial moments. At Mumbai Indians, the roles reverse, with Suryakumar expected to follow Hardik's plans despite leading India successfully.
India's Victory At T20 World Cup
Team India etched their name deeper into the history after securing a third men's Twenty20 World Cup title on Sunday, March 8. Team India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi stadium. The opener, Sanju Samson continued his prolific run with a third successive 80 plus score and also became the player of the tournament. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a remarkable 4‑15 on a flat track to claim player‑of‑the‑match honours.
