Starting October 1, 2025, Aadhaar authentication will become mandatory for booking reserved train tickets online on the IRCTC platform at least during the first 15 minutes of the reservation opening window. This new rule, aimed at curbing ticket touting and ensuring fair access for genuine passengers, marks a significant shift in how online railway bookings will operate in India.
IRCTC Booking Rule Change For Online Train Ticket Reservations From October 1; Check Latest Updates
The Indian Railways, through a ministry circular, has confirmed that only Aadhaar-verified users will be allowed to book general reserved train tickets online during the first 15 minutes after the booking window opens each day. This change is being introduced to prioritize access for legitimate passengers and eliminate automated or fraudulent bookings often carried out by touts.

Previously, this Aadhaar-based restriction was only applicable to Tatkal ticket bookings. However, the government has now decided to expand the rule to all general reservations made online via IRCTC, based on the positive outcomes observed during Tatkal implementations.
What Changes for IRCTC Users?
From October 1, 2025, users who have linked their Aadhaar to their IRCTC account will be the only ones eligible to book tickets during the first 15 minutes of the online reservation window.
After the first 15 minutes, the system will open for all registered IRCTC users, regardless of Aadhaar verification. Authorised ticket agents will also be permitted to book online reservations after this 15-minute window.
No Changes to Counter Ticket Bookings
The Indian Railways has clarified that the new Aadhaar-based restriction does not apply to PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters. Booking procedures and timing at PRS centers remain unchanged.
The 10-minute booking restriction for authorized agents at PRS counters for Tatkal tickets will continue as usual. General reserved tickets at counters will still follow the current open booking policy, without Aadhaar authentication.
How to Link Aadhaar with IRCTC Account?
To benefit from this early booking access, users must ensure their Aadhaar is linked to their IRCTC account:
- Log into your IRCTC account at www.irctc.co.in
- Go to 'My Profile'
- Click on 'Aadhaar Authentication'
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Authenticate via the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Ensure that your IRCTC profile name matches the details on your Aadhaar to avoid any verification errors.
How Will It Impact on Regular Travellers?
This move is expected to be a game changer, especially for daily commuters, festival travellers and passengers eyeing high-demand routes. It allows Aadhaar-authenticated users to get a head start and book tickets without system delays or interference from touts.
