The Government of India granted Navratna status to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) on March 3rd, 2025. This newest upgrade makes IRCTC the 25th and IREC the 26th Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs). Following the announcement, IRFC shares today witnessed a surge while IRCTC shares are trading flat in the overall down market.
How Do Stocks Qualify for Maharatna and Navratna Status?
The Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) in India are divided into three categories, which include Miniratna, Navratna, and Maharatna. This classification is based on their financial performance, size, and strategic importance. Currently, there are 14 Maharatna CPSEs, which are publicly listed companies with an average annual turnover exceeding Rs. 25,000 crore over the past three years. To qualify for Maharatna status, a company must already hold Navratna status, be listed on Indian stock exchanges, and meet shareholding norms. Additionally, it must have an average annual net worth of over ₹15,000 crore and a net profit exceeding ₹5,000 crore in the past three years, along with significant global operations.

The Navratna status, on the other hand, is granted based on six financial and operational parameters, including profitability, capital efficiency, and inter-sectoral performance. Companies scoring 60 or more across these criteria are eligible for Navratna recognition as per CNBC. The Navaratna companies operate in major sectors in India, like defense, aerospace, steel, mining, and infrastructure, playing a very important role in India's economic growth.

IRCTC share prices today
After receiving the Navratna status upgrade on March 3, IRCTC shares this morning rose 0.13%, currently trading at Rs. 675.75 at the time of writing. IRCTC share prices, however, have been declining lately and have lost nearly 13% in the past 30 trading sessions due to broader market volatility.

IRFC Share Price Today
The Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) also entered the Navratna clan, which boosted the investor sentiment greatly. As per official data, this CPSE reported an annual turnover of Rs. 26,644 crore and a net worth of Rs. 49,178 crore for FY 2023-24. The company's market capitalization currently stands at Rs. 1.49 lakh crore as of March 4th.
