Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is gearing up to overhaul its ticketing system to significantly reduce waiting times and enhance user experience. This upgrade, slated for completion by March 2025, aims to address long-standing issues such as delays in ticket confirmation, payment failures, and booking capacity constraints.
As part of the new initiative, IRCTC will implement a series of enhancements to its ticket booking infrastructure. The primary goal is to eliminate the waiting time for passengers after they click the "book" button. Once the upgrade is fully operational, commuters will receive their tickets almost instantaneously, without previous delays or issues.

IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Sanjay Jain has addressed the reasons behind the frequent problems faced by passengers, including payment deductions without ticket issuance and prolonged waiting periods. According to Jain, these issues stem from a capacity mismatch-where the number of people attempting to book tickets online far exceeds the system's processing ability.
Currently, IRCTC serves approximately three crore users across India. The system processes more than nine lakh ticket bookings daily, encompassing both direct passenger bookings and those made through agents. Despite the high volume of transactions, the existing capacity is insufficient to handle the demand efficiently.
To remedy this, the Indian Railways has committed to an upgrade. By 2023, the ticket booking capacity will be increased from 25,000 to 2.25 lakh transactions per minute. This upgrade is part of a broader initiative to modernize the passenger reservation system, encompassing both software and hardware improvements.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of this upgrade, noting that it was made possible by the Union Budget's allocations for enhancing railway infrastructure. The minister assured that these changes will streamline the booking process, making it more user-friendly and less prone to technical glitches.
Established on September 27, 1999, IRCTC was created as an extension of the Indian Railways. Its mission has been to professionalize and manage catering and hospitality services at railway stations and on trains. Over the years, IRCTC has become a crucial part of India's railway operations, facilitating a vast number of bookings and services daily.
With this upcoming upgrade, IRCTC aims to further its focus on improving passenger convenience and satisfaction. The anticipated changes are expected to make the ticket booking process smoother, reduce waiting times, and enhance the overall travel experience for millions of commuters across the country.
