Kantara: Chapter 1 Box Office Collection Crosses Rs 800 Crore; Beats Chhaava
Kantara: Chapter 1 has officially become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, with global earnings exceeding Rs 800 crore. Hombale Films reported that the film grossed Rs 809 crore worldwide, surpassing Chhaava's lifetime total of Rs 807 crore. Trade tracker Sacnilk reported slightly lower figures, estimating around Rs 775 crore, highlighting a minor discrepancy in reported collections.
In just two weeks after release, the film collected Rs 717 crore globally, adding another Rs 92 crore in its third week. Domestic collections were equally impressive, with India contributing a net of Rs 563.50 crore. These numbers underline the film's remarkable audience retention, even weeks after its theatrical launch.
The overseas response to Kantara: Chapter 1 has also been strong, with international collections reaching approximately $13 million. This demonstrates that the film's narrative and cultural themes resonate with audiences beyond India. To further enhance its global reach, an English-language version is expected to be released later this month, allowing international audiences to engage more deeply with the story.
Rishab Shetty's Film Kantara: Chapter 1 Storyline or Plot
A prequel to the 2022 hit Kantara, this chapter delves into the origins of the Daiva Kola or Bhuta Kola tradition-a spiritual ritual integral to Tulu culture in coastal Karnataka. Set in pre-colonial India, the story follows Berme, played by Rishab Shetty, a tribal leader who confronts oppressive aristocracy to protect his community's dignity, faith, and cultural beliefs. The film's narrative beautifully combines folklore, spirituality and social commentary, making it a unique cinematic experience.
Kantara 2 Star-Studded Cast and Crew
Kantara: Chapter 1 boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, Jayaram, and Pramodh Shetty. The film's music, composed by Ajaneesh Loknath, has received widespread acclaim for complementing the intense storytelling and rich visuals.
Produced by Hombale Films, the movie is praised for its captivating portrayal of cultural traditions, faith and folklore, along with breathtaking cinematography and immersive world-building.
